You can try a recovery, but unless you are using Ecco Extension, you may lose many of your settings and formatting.  With the Extension, virtually all of the settings are preserved in a recovery.

One common cause of this condition is that you are exceeding one of a number of Ecco limits.

You can use one of the memory info tools to see how much memory is being used and by what.  The simplest one is the one built into Ecco Extension.  That can quickly tell you in some cases what the culprit is.  But it isn't effective in every case and can be hard to interpret sometimes.

The total number of items in a file is not commonly the problem, so deleting random items may not help (of course it is sometimes the problem in which case that would help).  But more commonly the issues are too many items in one file, or too many items displayed in notepads.

Ecco Extension can help you with these issues as it displays the number of items in each folder, the memory info command, and a number of memory management tools behind the scenes.  It can even warn you when some limits are being reached... at least it used to, I have not see any warnings in a long time because I don't hit the limits.  I think it still does that. :)   I highly recommend using it.  It will reduce your memory issues.

For a quick and dirty process of elimination I would try deleting all the notepads,  do a database compact, save the file and reopen.  This will rule in or out view lines  ... i.e. too many items displayed in notepads.  Most notepads are easy to reconstruct so you can just add them back in.

File or database links damage is also possible.  You have the best chance of fixing that using Ecco Extension file recovery.

BACK UP YOUR FILES BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ELSE!
