I think it's unlikely that compacting would have any effect, and also the size of the file is unlikely to be relevant either.

The most favorable explanation would be that you are exceeding some Ecco limit related to too many items in one place or another, or the entire file.  It could also be some kind of rule problem or, less favorably some kind of corruption (which may be fixable).

Here are some harmless and simple things to try:

1. I think you are using EccoExtension.  Can you post the numbers that show when you right click the tray icon and select "Show Memory Info?"  In some cases they reveal what the problem is in cases like this.

2. Delete all your notepads, close the file and then reopen and test.  Notepads are generally not that hard to reconstruct.  This sometimes is the problem.  If it works then you can reconstruct your notepads.

Depending on the results of these things, we can see where to go from there.
