Jay - I believe I understand your concerns and hope Freidhelm and others will comment abt Win 8+  (I'm on 7 & XP).   I will add though I've been a forever user as well.  Abt. 5 years ago I went "back to school" (metaphorically) and am now entering phase 2 of that venture.  I needed a beefed up Ecco or equiv. and came upon the Ecco groups and EE.  It takes a good minute to learn the power and beauty of  Ecco Extension (EE) but with resources of both groups you can build a powerful research & project management tool, scalable (I think/hope - tweaking out now) to small group.and cross-platform use.  Quite incredible.  Data loss had been a concern but EE addresses that.  Ditto for getting data out of Ecco.  Print should be straight forward if you stay with Windows.  Some Mac & Linux folks apparently have issues w/ printing under certain circumstances.  -Mark
