Just did a quick test using EE.Simply created a new file and tried to archive the items in the calendar with the delete option enabled... used all default dates and settings.

You're right.  It didn't delete them.  I'm sure you are also right that it's a native EE bug... my memory was just fuzzy on that.  So this is one of those bugs that EE would have to fix.  At this point I don't know what the chances of that happening are.
