Ah yes, Friedhelm.  I had forgotten some of those things.  Yes, I do recall now that Ecco probably got dumped as part of a deal between MS and NM that involved scuttling it.  Yes, that was the scuttlebutt at the time.

I used to be fairly active in the old NM forum.  I remember a few attempts at different times and by different people to buy, acquire, or otherwise pry Ecco out of NM's hands as far back as the 90s.  Some of them raised money, some of them took a very long time, but all of them went nowhere.  And then later the failed open source release.  Those were frustrating years.

To tell you the truth, it was Slang who revived my interest in Ecco.  Just before he came along, I was feeling that I had nearly had it.  The prospect of more years with no new development was just getting too depressing after all that time.  If Slang hadn't arrived on the scene just then, I probably wouldn't be here today.  I am so thankful that I stayed around to see his magic show.  It's one of the most impressive things I have ever seen in any aspect of my life.
