Subject: [eccopro] Will this quasi-Evernote template for Ecco+EE be useful to you?
Greetings Ecco-ites.
I'm working on a quasi-Evernote template for Ecco+EE. Would this be useful to you?
I want to share it and "open source it" in a week or so when it is sketched-in enough.
It works - I had an earlier version going before running into file issues.
Why? & How It Works: Maye this isn't exactly true, but I see Ecco as being hard-wired around people names. Storing dates, information and outlines are strong seconds, but Ecco first demands some type of 'anchor input' before its other gifts become available. Ecco+EE allows Ecco to be re-structured and that is what this template is about.
As a researcher/journalist/writer/communicator type, names and schedules are only part of game. I need to input all kinds of information and tag loose-ended 'bits' to projects or stories or people or companies or whatever. I like Evernote for its "inputting a continuous stream of info" which is how my work goes, and it allows for tagging so there's a rat's chance one can find an article from a year ago by searching on an attribute. But of course those sorts of tricks are only a fraction of what Ecco has to offer. And with this new template, Ecco allows for a continuous stream of inputted information. Note: I've renamed certain standard Ecco folders for sake of display brevity.
Here's how it works....
The topmost folder in Ecco is called INPUT (was "Ecco Folders"). Most info is inputted using a Notepad called INPUT. Individual entries are entered on an "as you go" basis, auto date stamped, then manually tagged to checkmark folders for main attribute category(s). Each main category has a corresponding Notepad where more information in text, pop-up, date, number and extend text folders is inputted and displayed. . So for ex: "Doe, John" gets tagged into 'FoneBook' and perhaps 'Resource' and 'Interview' with text (loose notes) underneath John's name. After basics are entered on INPUT notepad, moving to the notepad "Resource" allows further checking off of attributes (tags) via columns, often set to display "sub folders".
The functionality of this system includes adding fragments or disassociated bits of info on-the-fly and tagging them such that a doing search or a click on a particular 'attributes' or 'tag' folder days later will bring weeks or months worth of "bits' gathering together in one place.
There are details to be worked out but this thing really works well for intended purpose.
I am inviting all Ecco-ites to use this file if it helps you and even better, to give me input on how to make it better. Ha - and even better than that, help me write the darn thing. I'm not so good at Slang rules and scripts are a foreign language I've yet to learn. And I've been diagnosed stage IV so maybe I should bow to reality and say "I ain't gonna learn LUA before I die". But maybe some cool features can be defined and someone can help write the "bells and whistles"? If not, no biggie because this thing works great without the bells.
Stay tuned for more. I'm guessing in about a week I'll have the brand-spanking new template, written 100% from the ground up (ie, no pointer errors!) posted and ready to be tire-kicked. From there maybe we can pitch in to make a good template even better?
-Mark
PS - I'm posting this info at both Ecco Yahoo forums hoping many will join in and benefit. However, this is an advanced template and you will need to be running Slang's Ecco Extension (EE) to use. If you do not use EE, perhaps this is a good time start!
