I'm not a Mac user, but indeed it does sound like the OS upgrade may be the culprit.  I know that Mac plays nanny state games with folders like the latest versions of Windows do.  For lack of anything else to suggest, maybe try putting your data files in a different folder, and/or putting your Ecco program files in a different folder.
