Thanks for your input - I figured a way around today. 
When I launch ecco and then "open" I have to change "files of type" descriptor from *.ECO to 'All files'.
Even though the files are all .eco files, it couldn't recognize them.
Now that I have opened them all, I no longer have to change it to "all files." It's as if opening and then closing them reset something.
Strange.
