Be sure that the partition where your .eco file is located is mounted.

(My Ecco data file is located in a separate partition and what you 
describe happens if I forget to to mount it.  I use the same Ecco data 
file for all of the operating systems I run. Your operating system must 
be capable of reading and writing to the type of partition your Ecco 
data file is in, also).
