Friedhelm's comment is interesting and I think he is suggesting that there is some sort of internal link between the values.  Therefore, he suggests, you should only use the Merge Column command in the event that one of the two columns involved will be deleted after the merge if you intend to continue to use the containing file.

I have used this command in the past, keeping both columns but never experienced the phenomenon you refer to however.  So Friedhelm's comment is of interest to me too as I am not aware of this link.

Perhaps Friedhelm can elaborate on the potential consequences of keeping both columns in the containing file after such a merge.  What exactly does this link do?  Is it a useful link, or more like an unwanted link that potentially creates undesirable results (a.k.a a bug)?
