I don't know why anyone remotely sentient in this day-&-age would think that my idea to utilize a recent backup as your mainline data store and application structure is "snarky".
Just the other day an email virus of unknown origin attacked my email address book, deleted some, and changed my online name. Then it deleted the first 250 emails I had flagged as important. It pierced my security software like a hot knife through butter.
It took three days to unscramble the eggs and reconstruct my email archive -- after figuring out that this incident wasn't some glitch, fluke or innocent malfunction but some new, zero-day exploit of unknown origin with unknown long-term consequences. Not only is the Security software industry losing the hacking wars, it imparts a false sense of security.
Why did it take three days? It wasn't properly backed up!
Truth is, you must assume that everything on a HDD could be copied and ported to a remote site or simply destroyed in situ at any moment; who knows by whom, or why. The only antidote that I can see is to be able to exchange HDDs like they are pistol ammo clips or rifle magazines. The choice is that, or staring at the black or blue screen of a malfunctioning, or frozen, computer.
I'm almost certain that the next hardware iteration will involve a master server that does nothing but mirror HDDs, so when one is knocked out, corrupted or locked (ransomeware) it can simply be replaced, like a flat tire.
Assume nothing will work like it's supposed to and go from there.
