Thank you for this help.
I should be able to find the program on her old machine.
Quick question. I imagine the program is distinct from the database file.
How do I know the difference?

Now to find an installer!

Thanks,

Harris

Welcome

For installation of Ecco, go to EccoMagic.com, look in the forums there for the best downloads for Windows 10. There was a 64bit installer, the fellow who wrote the installer asked for a fee for use, but has since passed away, so there is no way to use that system any longer. However, it is possible to get Ecco working without that installer.

If youare able to find the Ecco Folder on the Win 7 machine, you could just copy it to a zip drive (the whole folder), then copy it to the C: drive on the Win 10 machine (not in Program Files), then find the executable file (ecco32.exe) and double click to launch. It *should* work, but there may be more tweaking you need to do and others here are probably better able to help than me.

However, to clean up the data, there are two ways to go about it. From a SpreadSheet, you can save the data as a text file, then open in Word and careful use of find and replace can turn names into First Name, Last Name

The other way is to export the names from Ecco to a text file (including the columns for phone numbers etc), then using a simiilar careful use of find and replace in Word.

Hope that helps. I would make a copy of the text file and work on the Copy rather than the original just in case you make mistakes you can't recover from.

Hello Group!

I am so happy to have discovered you!

In brief. My sister, who is very non-tech savvy, has been using an old computer running Windows 7, and it was so glacially slow, that after a lot of prodding, I was ang able to get her to purchase a new HP all in one system at Costco. So, she now has a modern, fast, and clean system.

I should add that I'm primarily a Mac OS guy, so migrating from an old OS to a new OS and new computer had a bit of a learning curve. I used LapLink so that for the most part the new system looks like her old one, and her bookmarks, settings, etc.. were all persevered. I should note that although I was using the Pro version, apps didn't transfer over, as well a ton of files. Fortunately, I was able to get a code to install the current Office suite, and manually bring her data over that LapLink left behind.

Ok, so two days o f this, as the old computer was so slow, plus lots of tech support later, I have a nicely running system. Except... there was a file on the desktop, an Excel SS file, named ECCO Backup. My sister kept asking about her address book, and after talking to someone who helped her out in the past, I found the Ecco app on her old system, complete with all addresses, etc. The previous helper, used the app to export her data as a SS, in the hopes of importing it into something new or current. But, gave up after that, and my sister continued to use Ecco.

Which brings me to this group. Ecco runs fine on her old computer, but lets politely say that my sister was well... somewhat erratic in how she used the fields. So, for first name for example, she might have a first name, maybe first and last, and maybe an email, or phone, or personal note. And.. this goes on throughout the entire address book, which has I think 1600 entries. I looked at the SS and it appears the only way to fix this mess is to cut and paste the entire dataset, so bring order to disorder.

So, not having the time to do this, I wondered if there was a way to find a copy of the app to run under Windows 10, and tips on how to migrate data. In researching this, I found a mention of a 64 bit installer, but no active links, and no real idea of what to do to help my sister out. Sooner or later, I'll just tackle cleaning up the spreadsheet, and figuring out a way to import into Google, MS, maybe something like FileMaker Pro, but my main concern is not having two computers running for her, one just for Ecco.

So, any an all help would be appreciated, last week was the first time I had heard of Ecco, so truly a newbie!

Thanks and Happy New Year!
