 Whoops.  Now it is working again. 
Gave my computer a time out--turned it off, let it sit overnight, endured more downloads, and now Ecco is back. 
It was a magical experience . . . by Arthur C. Clarke's definition ("any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic").  It did remind me how much I depend on Ecco.
