Hi r634718-/[email protected] ,

Thank you for helping!

No I am not.

I took my older 18M file and deleted a few embedded photos. The size was reduced to around 16M.

No I do not.

I just ran recov and compact now on my file. It said 'successful'. Method 1 was used.

I think I have a workable file now, however it is still quite large.

I just ran Magic Memory Report and these were the results:

65,384 Items

45,246 View Lines

3,305 Pointers

(143 free)

so not much wiggle room at all.

I would like to break up this file into two or three smaller files.

Would you be able to guide me through the steps required to do this (if possible)?

Thanks again!

Rick

Hi Rick,

I browsed the thread and assume you are still looking for help.

Your file size is quite large. I have been using the same main data file since the mid 90s and it's about 1MB (the most productive 1MB on my computer by the way!). But of course I periodically archive things (not using the Ecco archive feature but my own system).

I have seen files as large as you describe in only three circumstances:

1. Files that have embedded files within them that have use a lot of space;

2. Files that are carefully constructed to maximize the data storage capabilities of Ecco and;

3. Files that have corruption in them.

In the case of #1, I don't use embedded files since I have run into problems with those in the past and they are such old technology, that I think it's risky now to have them in the file.

I don't think you are talking about a #2 scenario.

In the case of #3, the files I have seen suddenly ballooned in size rather than built up size gradually. So if you are aware of the size suddenly increasing by multiple MB at some point, and have no other explanation for it, that could be a clue.

Two questions:

1. Do you use EE (aka Ecco Extension)?

2. Have you tried File/Database/Recover and File/Database/Compact? If not I would try those in that order. While running the recover, observe any dialogs on the screen carefully and try to determine if it uses method 1 or method 2.

Keep a backup of your file of course before doing anything!
