Yes, this is a good technique, but not necessarily a game changer for the situation you have. Since there are so many variables and there is so much subjectivity in the way you want to divide up and organize your data, I don't think there is any easy way to do it. Part of the decision of each item is the content of the item. One item may even contain multiple topics that have to be divided up separately. It's a lot of work no matter how you slice it. Now that you know this technique though, it may be helpful once you get past this and have a new file structure that suits your needs. As I create outline structures I try to use this to minimize the item pointers used. That way it's a one at a time process that adds up to significant savings over time.
