Maximum columns in PhoneBook view?

I have a lot of columns in PhoneBook view (haven't counted how many, but can do so if that would help).  When I tried to add several more, the Column > Insert Column became greyed out after the first few.  Is there a limit to the number of columns available/allowed in PhoneBook view?  Is there a workaround to avoid that limit?
