Somehow VB mitigates hardware issues.  Best way to describe it is VB has figured out universal drivers for audio, video, SCSI (I think), USB, serial, parallel, etc.  So as long as you have, for example, a copy of XP running, then anything that would have worked with a real XP works in virtual and again - somehow VB has drivers that mitigate out to your modern host machine.  SO for example, I'm running an old scanner with old graphics software (all XP era) on a modern Win10 machine with a virtual XP I don't have to think too hard.  It all just works - once you know how to do it.  ANd the curve is not impossible.
