I did not need to use Windows 7 at all for this particular installation under Linux. I just installed Ubuntu Linux and then VirtualBox and then WinXP. In fact, even though the instructions warn that after 30 days WinXP may need to be registered, I don't believe I had to register. And this is precisely the issue that I'm concerned about.
