Maybe this will help...

VirtualBox is a host program and what platform it hosts on is agnostic to what OS' run under it.  Only caveat is you cannot run a 32-bit host and with a 64-bit guest OS under the 32-bit host. IE, host to guest can be 32-bit to 32-bit, 64-bit to 32-bit, or 64-bit to 64-bit, but not 32-bit to 64-bit.  Well, and if you run Mac under a Linux or Win host config, you are naughty.

Under VB, OS' do not interact other than thru clipboard, trading off USB & other ancillary devices & networked drives.  VB does not know or care what OS' are running under the host, as long as you have enough RAM to support the host OS plus the guest(s).

I like the sound of a free XP.  But if it comes w/ a hitch and becomes a time soak, there are WinXPs on ebay for $10 to $15.

Your tipping point may vary on the following issue, but you guys here at the Ecco forum have been so helpful over the years and I like this new computer setup so much, I'll pound the drum one more time on VirtualBox ....

Having one $750 box (used 2 yr old refurb Xeon super box off ebay) running everything in a shop that once took 6 boxes to run is nothing short of awesome.  No other word describes. My "keeping the shop running" hassle factor has dropped considerably.  Noise, heat, energy & space consumption ... all down. Speed at getting stuff done is up.  Now granted, this is a mostly Windows shop.  But the principles still apply .... Multiple Ecco's - one for each OS - communicate across the Host and Guest OS' beautifully.  I use a donation-ware launcher with the same core config of Utils & Portable apps on each OS to keep my mind for going ballistic.  If you have the brains to learn and use Ecco, you have the brains to learn and run VirtualBox.
