Hi:

As, I seem to remember, someone already explained here (or maybe in the
sister forum),  Windows XP does NOT run UNDER Win7.  Both are *operating
systems* which demand a machine all to themselves (you can have
multiple-boot machines, but each "boot" is its own computer).  WinXP It
runs INSIDE a *virtual computer* running under  ANY operating system.  I
have two laptops, one a Win7 and the other a Win10 machine.  Both have
VMWare Workstation Player installed (It's FREE!!!) and both have WinXP
running perfectly inside the virtual computer in each machine.  I do
have an original WinXP installer, so no problem with that, but maybe the
versions offered by Microsoft will run too without the need to
register/pay (please do report if you install these; I downloaded and
saved them just in case ....)

A "virtual computer" is contained, in the "host" machine, in a series of
Folders/Files.  In the case of the VMWare software, you can choose where
these Folders/Files are located.  I put mine in a separate partition in
my hard disk.  A great plus, in my case, is that you can just copy the
files to another machine running the same version of VNW Workstation
Player (or maybe even a more advanced one) and the "virtual XP computer"
will just run in the new machine without any further need to reinstall
WinXP or any programs running under it!  You just install VMWWP in the
new machine, copy the files representing the virtual computer from the
old to the new machine and "open" the virtual XP computer in the new
machine under VMWWP.  The first time you do this, VMWWP will ask you
where the files are located and, then, whether the virtual machine files
you are trying to open were copied from another machine.  You sheepishly
answer "yes" and you should be up and running exactly as in the old
machine, WinXP, programs, data files stored there, etc.  Great!  That is
hou I "migrated" my virtual computer from Win7 to Win10.  I have even
considered having my next machine run ONLY VMWWP and install all
programs under a virtual machine there.  That way, if I change
computers, I would only have to install VMWWP, copy the "virtual
computer" files to the new computer and be up and running in no time
without having to reinstall anything else.  Has anyone ever tried this?

In the case of VMWWP (and others too), the "virtual computer"
communicates with the "host" computer as if it were in the same network,
so you can have a *program" running in the "virtual computer" and it's
*data files* located in the "host computer". Cool!!!

Before VMWWP I tried using the "native" Win7 virtual machine
application, but it was sooooooo sloooooow that it drove me to
desperation.  Fortunately, my son (who else?) pointed me to VMWWP and
everything was fine.  I have three 16-bit programs running there (two I
cannot live without, but they were never updated to 32-bit, and another,
an ancient Excel-like worksheet, which I keep because I have, literally,
hundreds of files created using this software and which would take
thousands of man-hours to reproduce under Excel, as they cannot be read
by Excel, nor is there a converter program.  I have not tried the
"native" Win10 virtual computer software, nor I intend to, but, if you
want to do so, it is important to keep in mind the warning by vcavanna,
below.

I've read claims that this version of XP will only run under Windows 7,
so it is interesting that it is running under VirtualBox (assuming it
never requires registration). If it works under VirtualBox under Linux,
I wonder if it will also run in VirtualBox under Windows 10, even if it
is not supposed to. While I do have Ecco Pro running under Windows 10,
there are some business programs I use which need XP. Therefore at
present I have a combination of Windows 10 computers as well as some
Windows 7 computers, which I use to also run Windows XP. With support
for Windows 7 ending, it would be helpful if I could run the Windows XP
virtual machines in Windows 10.
