   What I'm looking for is a way for the protected  computer to  detect when the power fails ( and (or) when the alternate power source has kicked on) and page me, or somehow let me know that something has gone wrong. I can't be the first person to think of this so there should be some way to do this right? I've been looking for a way, but I haven't had any luck yet.

AIUI a UPS usually has a serial (or USB) line that you connect
to the protected computer.  The proprietary software that comes with the UPS
then arranges for an orderly shutdown when the UPS battery is getting weak. 

   

So I guess you need to talk to your UPS vendor. 

   

I think the whole point of a UPS is for the protected equipment
to carry on business-as-usual.  So (excluding the proprietary software) I’d
EXPECT the protected computer to be completely unaware.

  Hi All,

    Is there a way to programatically detect when the Uninterruptable
  Power Supply or battery backup kicks on? Such as when the power fails and the
  battery or backup generator kicks in. I've tried using the GetSystemPowerStatus(
  ) to detect when the ACLineStatus changes but when I unplug my battery backup
  from the wall and have the machine running from the battery those functions
  report that the system is still running on AC. What I need is an event
  handler or function that will fire as soon as the power source for the
  machine changes. 

  

   I've also tried using the WM_POWERBROADCAST event message to flag when
  the power source changes but that didn't work either. I'm looking for
  something written in C++ that I can incorporate into my project. Any ideas?
  In the mean time, I'll keep looking. Thanks guys.
