process environment monitoring

Hi All I need to monitor the environment of a specific process within my program, other than through polling, is there any direct way to do that? I am thinking about using a seperate thread on a timer that periodically checks the environment of the target process and if it detects any changes, it simply readjusts the environment to what it was when the program initialized. The reason, if anyone is curious, is that I do not want any outside processes corrupting the environment of my "protected" process. Any ideas or suggestions for another approach? My programming environment is MSVC 6.0 on XP sp2, Thanks for any help here.
