You need to be concerned with licensing only insofar as you need to
understand how the product is licensed and be willing to abide by it
(same as closed source).
I don't think you need to be concerned with backdoors (I think it's
beyond doubt that backdoors are exceedingly more prevalent in closed
source).

I've evaluated DNN a few times over the years, and I know I would
never recommend it. I don't like the way it's designed (e.g. the
plugin architecture) and I don't like the business model behind it.
That being said, I know some people have had good experiences with it,
so maybe it would work for you.

If you require a 'serious' CMS that's more customized/integrated with
your particular business practices, I'd look at something like
django-cms, joomla, or plone (python- or php-based). Otherwise, I'd
just grab WordPress, set it up for the users, and see how far they
could go with that.
