I'm working on a standard for colour coding user interface elements to
alert users to the publication status of the data they enter. For
example if the data will be made public then the user input element is
red, and if the data is privately encrypted it is coloured green.

The specification is relatively extensive. I wanted to strike a balance
between providing a lot of information and keeping the interface simple.

From a technical perspective the scheme is simplicity itself. Simply put
the BICC Scheme Classification into the user interface element's HTML
class attribute and a standardised style sheet will do the rest.

From an administrative perspective implementing this scheme is close to
a nightmare. Ascertaining the correct BICC Scheme Classification for
user interface elements is complex policy work and often requires
computation.

However I think the scheme provides useful information to users that by
rights they should know so I will endeavour to implement this scheme in
my future products.

If you have any thoughts I'd love to hear them. Bear in mind though that
I might not take on board your suggestions as I've had some discussion
with others about this before and have learned that it is wildly
controversial. I still like to know what people think, and maybe someone
will think of something I haven't considered.

My plan with implementing the BICC Scheme in my products is to have it
enabled by default but generally to have a configuration option where
users can disable it for themselves if they find it useless or unsightly.
