Hi John,

It's pretty simple really. The basic format is a pretty standard
"major.minor.revision.build".

The general rule is that no two formal builds (even of different versions of
the same product) have the same build no., and that each
"major.minor.revision" is unique to a given public release.

So you won't get two public 3.5.6.xx builds, for example; nor a 3.5.x.x and
a 4.0.x.x build with the same build number.

When we start work on a new major/minor version, the revision field is kept
as 0 until after it's been publicly released. Hopefully the diagram below
will explain it:

  Dev Release (v3.0) Release (v3.5)
3.5.0.167 3.0.8.166 (i)
3.5.0.168
3.5.0.170
3.5.0.171  (ii)                =>  3.5.1.173
                                   3.5.1.172
4.0.0.173 (iii) 3.5.2.174
4.0.0.175
4.0.0.176
4.0.0.177 3.5.3.178
4.0.0.179
                                   3.5.4.180
4.0.0.181 3.5.5.182 (iv)
4.0.0.183
4.0.0.185 (WIP) 3.5.6.184 (WIP)

  (i) Final v3.0 build. Superseded by 3.5.0.171
 (ii) First public v3.5 build
(iii) First v4.0 development build
 (iv) Current public v3.5 build

Build nos for the two WIP builds are obviously predicted rather than actual
at the moment.
