1. I think, if I'd had the equipment to do anything like that at all,
I would go for
a separate Windows-machine for doing music on.
2. I'm running Debian. I'm not sure what the difference to Ubuntu is,
but I'm sure
I had a good reason. I used to run Gentoo, which is an excellent
distro, but since
everything (well, you can choose to use pre-compiled versions of openoffice and
firefox and probably some more too) is compiled from source on every
installation
or update, my ageing hardware took too much time on these tasks. You'd
definitely
learn some important things about Linux in the process of using that one too!
Other seemingly good distros I would consider are SEPIS and SUSE.
3. No distro I ever heard of makes you wipe your whole disk. Maybe in the old
days you had to do this, I'm sure no distro does this now.
