when to load a module

I have solved my weather issues by ditching alias completely and 
swapping lscolor for ECS again. I can save the color variable to a file 
and never need to reload those settings. Booya!

But now I am thinking, I don't need ECS loaded all the time, it should 
be safe to do load the module, write the values to file and then unload 
the module. What about my other modules? How do you guys know when you 
can do that?
