I am around, but a bit roughed up right now (today, pull the wisdom
tooth. Next week, more eye injections)
I have asked some general questions while you were gone. Chances are
some will say it was helpful, others will growl about the length and
depth of the questions.
We'll talk about them more in depth, to be sure.
Meanwhile, I do have one observation that might be worth some tossing
around.
When I asked about the benefits of using LiteStep I received a number of
responses. I would group them into two piles:
(a) LiteStep allows me to take hold of every part of my computing
environment, rejecting any notion that there is an aspect of my desktop
that cannot be improved. Having a comfortable and well designed desktop
will free me to do my best work, to think the most clearly and to easily
access all the tools I need. I am not like every other user and while
some might be content with the one-size-fits-all desktop, I can't bring
myself to be that much of a conformist.
(b) The LiteStep community is wonderful. Different folks have different
strengths, different approaches, but taken together they provide an
awesome group of desktop customization tools. I might have some tools
with which I have come to be comfortable, but you never know what you
might see tomorrow. I enjoy the ability to download and install some of
the creations of others so that I can steal the ones I like, ignore the
ones just not for me, and maybe even get a spark of inspiration to use
in my next customization tool. This community is amazing because of its
diversity and the generally high quality of those who hang out here from
time to time.
There are others, but it would be fair to say that the the majority of
responses I received.
This is the thing that struck me as I was looking through the responses:
Even though it was clear that every visitor would be treated with
respect, the desire to help others change their desktops, or even the
opportunity to get our LiteStep designs on literally millions of
monitors across the world didn't rise to the top of many lists. There is
a strong current running through all of the responses which says
"LiteStep is a great and wondeful product that offers so much to enhance
my desktop. Others might not like it but that really doesn't bother me.
I don't feel compelled to persuade anyone to install and use LiteStep
and it won't bother me at all if hundreds of LiteStep users never gather
within these web pages to vote on their favorite gadgets.
I like LiteStep and recognize it to be a developer's tool. I would love
to see our LiteStep community grow by the addition of individuals who
will themselves become active participants in our community."
I did not sense pretense or a sense of superiority here, just an
acknowledgment that LiteStep is not a tool for everyone, that the
relatively high level of computing proficiency required to effectively
use LiteStep will necessarily exclude many users who just have no
interest in diving into the innards of their graphical user interface.
Does this ring true? What am I missing or misunderstanding?
I am diving into this early on so that we can look at all of our
websites, materials and policies and make some informed decisions based
on where this community wishes to travel from here.
