I heard about LiteStep on an unpopular nerd TV show called KT3Z in the 
late 90's, I was in high school back then and still running Windows 95 
even though Win 98 was out already. That was on a Pentium 133 with a 
ridiculously low amount of ram. Explorer was very unstable and took many 
MBs of ram. LiteStep with a simple theme took about 1 MB of ram and did 
not crash as much so it was a keeper even tough the original setup 
experience back then was not easy (no installer+ every theme required a 
special LS build, dlls & paths). Also, having a different, more 
functional & more configurable desktop experience was a big plus for me. 
Later I started customizing everything (skins with WindowBlinds and for 
apps and all that). I made a few good looking themes that I never 
published. I really liked to have something radically different than 
everybody and also when somebody tried to use my computer, they 
generally could not do anything because some of my themes were based on 
desktop shortcuts and floating hidden bars.

I continued using it until about 2005. I now use Linux at home except 
for games. I still start LS once in a while to test the new themes and 
new modules. LS mostly works in Wine which is quite nice. I also think 
LS should be made available as a shell option for ReactOS.
