[OT] Multi-touch on Windows Vista?

Hi,

I'm sorry this is off-topic. But I wish someone here knew this information.

I've got an HP laptop with a multi-touch touchpad. It's still a Synaptics touchpad running in Windows Vista, but it has multi-touch. In a program like Internet Explorer 8, or Microsoft Office Word 2007, you can use two fingers to zoom in and out. And according to the driver page, it works on XP too. I'm pretty sure that the Windows 7 multi-touch gesture API aren't available on these platforms. So how could these program understand these actions?

Is the touchpad driver simply translating a zoom gesture to Ctrl + somehow? It doesn't look so, since it feels like true multi-touch. How do I develop a program to respond to these gestures, without Windows 7 of course?
