Thanks, I've added a manifest and it worked.
I've also found a "special note" about button in a different MSDN
article,
in case anybody reads this thread in the future:

It says:

Note    Custom draw is implemented in version 4.70

is also supported for button controls if you are runningWindows XP and
have an application manifest to ensure that Comctl32.dllversion 6 is
