I think my problem is that Win32 cannot work with 8-bit grayscale (non-palettized) and when you use palettes you don't have 256 values without the 'system colors', (easily?) or that's the way it was 20 years ago when I was struggling with this stuff. So I have to convert to 32 bit. (and then convert back again to 8 bit by the way). I wonder if Win32 still has 'identity palettes' it probably does.
