Which is why the explorer list view is a virtual control (and one which
supports grouping, something MS unfortunately don't support in the public
API).

Believe me once you've written a virtual control with an appreciable number
of items in it the speed difference over a standard control is really quite
noticeable.

I can't help with that unfortunately - virtually all the list controls I
write use report view exclusively.
