Thanks for the clarification.

FWIW I've generally found it quite straightforward to convert control
classes (custom button, list ctrl classes etc.) written in MFC to their WTL
equivalents and they are for the most part equivalent, so that might be a
better option in many cases.

Using WTL in MFC projects is reasonably straightforward; the converse is not
always true as MFC expects its environment to be set up in a very particular
way  and has some nasty internal dependencies. WTL however is far less
fussy.
