toolbar text cropped

I have a basic toolbar (standalone, not in any rebar) with TBSTYLE_LIST showing text on the right for each button. When I disable commands the text is drawn cropped as you can see in this pic:

when the commands are set to enabled, it draws fine!?

any ideas what could this be?

PS. is it just me or this group's search function is a bit foobar? Half of the time I get an 'error server busy' and the other half it complaints about imaginary UTF-8 strings even when I type plain english!!
