What does
	grep -1 h_active /var/log/XFree86.0.log
say ?

If it doesn't say anything, try starting with (as well as your current mode)
ModeLine     "1680x1024" 108.0 1680 1696 1736 1784 1024 1027 1030 1056 -hsync -vsync -csync
and then run xvidtune.
