It depends of display manager you are using.
For example, xdm will read your ~/.xsession by default but gdm will
read your ~/.xsessin only if you chose "Default" from it's menu.

And for the RedHat update applet, it starts from GNOME session or
KDE session and have nothing to do with .xsession or X.
