Indeed, not all glibc-based systems make /var/run/utmp group-writtable. Further, group-writtability isn't dependent on glibc version at all, but appears to have originated (on Linux) as a RedHat-ism. Now, I'll grant my test on /etc/group wasn't perfect. But it was based on the premise that a utmp group isn't needed on a system that doesn't make the utmp file group-writtable. Testing for glibc version doesn't solve anything, but makes this problem worse.
