Actually, I see now that my build's makefiles are a mixture of 
"makefile"'s and "Makefile"'s, when they should all be "Makefile"'s.  This 
is with a case-insentive HFS+.  It would seem then that the documented 
case-preserving aspect of this, and your, file system is only randomly (?) 
being respected, regardless of its case sensitivity.  So, this is either a 
bug in Apple's implementation or something else needs to be set.
