Questions regarding cvs compile

I've successfully built X from cvs but as I've noted in previous 
messages, execution of X causes a spontaneous reboot of my box.  Not 
pretty.  So, I figured I'd revisit the docs in a bit more detail and 
found references to identifying the distribution in linux.cf.  Much to 
my dismay, there is no option for a Mandrake distribution.  Is this an 
oversite?  What should this value be set to for Mandrake distributions??

I didn't have to buy my radio from a specific company to listen
to FM, why doesn't that apply to the Internet (anymore...)?
