The part that is the fix is the >>Option "Display" "BIOS"<< part.
This tells the X server to consult the BIOS and use whatever settings
it is using for the display.

I put the Option line in /etc/X11/XF86Config (Red Hat 8.0) and
the screen doesn't garble anymore when the lid is closed and
open again.  Hope this helps.
