i don't know anything about this, but wanted to comment on the fs check.
probably you have a large ext2 filesystem? if you are using a journaling filesystem 
(such as reiserfs, or the others wich i don't know), the file system check takes 
only a few seconds. if you often reboot your machine(s), this would be a lot 
less frustrating.
