applications that switch modes crashing X on exit

Has anyone else noticed that when you add some oddball low-resolution
modes to X, then run MAME in DGA mode, often in the latest versions of
Xfree the whole X session will die when you exit the game?
And it's not just MAME; other SDL games and such die too. I can't play
Myth2 or SimCity3000 anymore because the screen goes wonky.
Has anyone else noticed this, or is it peculiar to the Debian
Xfree86-4.2 packages?
