This didn't work either.  I tried putting the ranges that are suggested 
for my monitor when it probes it ( it gets the correct values and puts 
them in the config file, but X ignores these) and it didn't make any 
difference.

I also tried useing an option called crt_screen, but it complained that 
there was no such option (I'm using version 4.2.99.2 of xfree86).
