Agreed.
I believe that you would loose many developers - maybe as many as 
half if you removed client-server.

I'm not comfortable with this.
If we get to the point that the majority don't use parts of the
client-server protocol we are leaving ourselves open to software rot,
where mainstream developers break bits, and they take longer
to fix them in client-server.

X *is* client-server; if you really have a problem with it you
should probably be using something else.

I've no problem here, and am happy to hear of improvements,
but I'm not holding my breath. After all is was designed to
get this right, and is still doing well two decades later.
