I think this is a key issue (perhaps THE key issue, besides code-management-process). XFree86 never once said "hey, we're X". It was always "hey, we're gonna implement X on all these platforms/devices that the other guys aren't". Somewhere along the path, the perception arose that XFree86 == X. It's not what we ever aspired to be, really. Now the active leadership of XFree86 needs to decide whether they want to be a definition body as well as an implementation body. I have my personal opinion, which is worth very close to nothing since I haven't written a line of XFree86 code in like 6 years, I think... This discussion is going on, though. David Dawes is trying to drive closure on some of this, so that we can speak as a project/organization.
