"no screen" errors

After I run xf86config from root everything appears to complete successfully.  Then I run startx.  Eventually the program bombs out with "no screens found" and "screens found but do not have usable configurations."  

I have searched for info on screens but found either nothing or have been overwhelmed with irrelevant information.  I have tried differnet kernels.  Does this error refer to the monitor and display setting?
