Ok, so installing XFree86 4.3 did the trick so far as driver support for
my Intel 845 video card is concerned - thanks!

However, the problems haven't stopped there. Now I get the following
errors which cause the Xserver to crash:

(EE) GARTInit: Unable to open /dev/agpart (No such device)
(EE) I810(0): No Video BIOS modes for chosen depth.
(EE) Screens(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

 Fatal Server Error:
 no screens found

I get these message when I set the color depth to 24 bits and specify
nothing for the video card RAM.

If I set the color depth to 16 bits, I am able to get a very simplified
GUI desktop with awful resolution. I'd appreciate it if somebody can point
me in the right direction from here.

 Thanks ... salman
