I kind of feel the same way about html email, I guess we all have our 
little preferences 8-)

I would point out (not as a developer but simply as a lowly user) that I 
have managed to update this particular driver (savage_drv.o) several 
times without upgrading the server. Most recently running server 4.2.x I 
was able to install 1.1.27t and this corrected the historical video 
issues I've had with my thinkpad t20's Savage/IX-MV controller. It was 
only upgrading to 4.3.0 that reversed this advance.

I do agree with you, it is preferable to make driver's independant of 
the server, but not always possible. Just look at the kernel, you have 
to compile modules specifically for each kernel build.

While XFree86 is certainly far from perfect, you have to agree that the 
project has been providing all of us with X servers for many years. And 
while I don't know the specifics of the individuals in the XFree86 
project, if its anything like other free software projects, none of them 
are getting rich.

 From where I sit, in spite of the "enterprise" support for linux, its 
still individuals interested in developing a technology that make linux 
possible for me.

While IBM has made a big deal of its support for linux I've been running 
it on my thinkpad for two years with absolutely no help from them.

BTW, could anyone point me at those new server binaries, I'll be happy
