My point wasn't that a version of Freetype shouldn't be included in the
distribution, but that building and installing it by default on platforms
where it is inappropriate causes trouble.  Having a version available known
to serve a part of the community is clearly goodness.

The problem is that the current build system tends to be very
monolithic and encourage the situation we are now in, where anyone buiding
and installing XFree86 4.3 on the most common platform ends up with a buggy
version of freetype installed as the version all applications use
on the system.
